Faculty of Life and Environmental Science
Faculty of Life and Environmental Science
The Faculty of Life and Environmental Science was established in October of 1995 by reorganization of the Faculty of Agriculture and the Department of Biology in the Faculty of Science. The Faculty consists of five departments: Biological Science, Ecology and Environmental Science, Life Science and Biotechnology, Agriculture, and Regional Development. The Marine Biological Station, University Farms, and University Forests were attached to the Faculty as the Education and Research Center for Biological Resources.
The Faculty’s objectives are: (1) to understand the mechanism of biological systems, (2) to develop new technologies including biotechnology, environmental preservation and reclamation, and sustainable production systems, (3) to apply scientific results and technologies in agriculture, forestry, fishery and other bioindustry fields, and,(4) to make contributions to local communities.
The undergraduate program offers a comprehensive curriculum that combines lectures, laboratory and field work, and small-group instruction. Laboratory and field work help undergraduates deepen their understanding of the related lectures. Small-group classes improve mutual understanding between students and faculties. Graduates from our faculty find employment in private companies, enter the civil service, or become high school science teachers. Students who want to continue their research can enter Master courses in the Graduate School of Life and Environmental Science.
International Admission Policy
Our faculty seeks students who are interested in subjects including biology, ecology, environmental science, life science, biotechnology, agriculture, agricultural economics, and agricultural engineering. We are committed to providing high quality and professional education and research opportunities to students with a wide variety of backgrounds. As part of our admission standards, we give weight to students most likely to benefit from our study and research programs. We provide some specific admission criteria for international students in which programs will be conducted in English. For more information please see our web site.

Message from Dean
Kenji TANIGUCHI Professor
The Faculty of Life and Environmental Science supports the earth, filled with “life”.
The earth is filled with an unimaginable variation of life from big mammals like whales to green plants and tiny microbes. Human beings are one of them. However, human activities have brought about destruction of the environment, exhaustion of resources and a shortage of food. Today, finding solutions to these problems is an urgent issue for all human beings, and it is necessary to give serious consideration to these problems from the stand point that we should co-habitate with other beings to bring harmony to nature.
The Faculty of Life and Environmental Science was established based on the coursework of the Faculty of Agriculture and the Department of Biology in the Faculty of Science. The aim of the Faculty of Life and Environmental Science is to study basic biology and develop science and technology in the areas of biotechnology, environment conservation and sustainable bio-production systems. Our goal is to establish comfortable communities full of amenities through progress in basic science and technology in agriculture, forestry and fishery, and the new bio-industries.
We hope many eager students, who will lead the world into the next century, will come together and study hard with enthusiasm to protect the planet, the Green Earth. We hope our graduates will contribute to communities in every corner of the world in the future.
