President (Ph.D.)Indian physicist C.V. Raman discovered a new light scat-tering phenomenon in 1928, and was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics only two years later. This light scattering phenom-enon is now called Raman scattering. It is a phenomenon in which light exchanges energy with the molecules that make up a substance. The scattered light contains a lot of molecular information. Raman spec-troscopy is a method of investigating the properties of molecules using Raman scattered light. The measurement of Raman scattered light does not require any special preparation such as staining and can be measured as it is. Moreover, it does not damage living cells or tissues. Therefore, by measuring Raman scattered light with a microscope, it is possible to investigate the properties of the molecules that form Shimane University and RESVO, Inc. developed a joint research course which analyzes amounts of stress through urinalysis. This research established a tech-nique to quantify the degree of increases in stress by adding the assessment of an immune mark-er to the value of biopyrrin. The feature of this method is its su-perior measurement accuracy compared to that of convention-al stress markers. These markers have already been sold by RESVO for research purposes, but the research team is working to resolve issues such as price and eventually aim for commercialization. The joint research course, in addition to developing stress markers that can be analyzed through urinalysis, also researches and develops therapeutic agents for schizophrenia caused by constitutional hyperbilirubin-emia as well as for immunocompromised psychiatric disorders.Professor OH-NISHI Arata at the Faculty of Medicine living cells and tissues while keeping them alive. In other words, you can see the vibrant activities of various molecules that are active for life to live and act.at Shimane University, and also sitting president of RESVO, stated, “If the number of samples increase, it should be easier for these markers to be used at a lower price. It would be beneficial if this led to the earlier discovery of stress working people have.”Raman SpectroscopyR & D and Practical Application through Joint Venture with Shimane University
