On Tuesday, June 2, 2026, H.E. Ms. Nagma Mohamed Mallick, Ambassador of India to Japan, and Mr. Chandru Appar, Consul General of India, Osaka-Kobe, visited Shimane University. The delegation toured the Japan-India Global Education and Research Center (JIGER), established in January 2026, as well as the Raman Spectroscopy Laboratory. The visit was arranged in conjunction with their attendance at the unveiling ceremony of the Mahatma Gandhi bust held in Matsue City.
The delegation first visited the JIGER office, where Director Dr. Hemanth Noothalapati provided an overview of the long-standing collaboration between Shimane University and India. He highlighted how the university’s extensive research in Raman spectroscopy has served as a foundation for academic exchange with India. He also expressed the Center’s commitment to further strengthening educational and research partnerships with Indian institutions.
The group then proceeded to the Raman Spectroscopy Laboratory, where Dr. Noothalapati explained the laboratory’s equipment and ongoing research projects in detail. Ambassador Mallick showed great interest in the advanced analytical instruments and the wide range of research fields in which Raman spectroscopy is applied. She actively engaged with questions about the research background and future prospects, creating a warm and engaging atmosphere throughout the visit.
Following the laboratory tour, an exchange session was held with President Hiroki Otani and Vice President Yoshimi Kataoka(in charge of Promotion of Globalization). President Otani welcomed the delegation and introduced the university’s collaborations with Indian institutions, including the Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad, with which Shimane University has an academic agreement. Ambassador Mallick proposed expanding cooperation not only in science and engineering but also in sociology and the social sciences. The meeting proved to be a meaningful opportunity to explore further academic collaboration between Shimane University and India.
