SU Capacity Building Project Towards a Sustainable Society (S-SPRING) (hereinafter referred to as “this project”) aims to solve various problems of the region, Japan, and the world, and to train Ph. D. students who will lead a future knowledge-based society towards the development of a sustainable society in Japan. This project provides financial support for such excellent students, and courses for them to acquire the skills required by companies, etc., thereby creating an environment in which they can devote themselves to their research without worrying about employment. we are recruiting about 10 students (S-SPRING students) to be recruited for the program.

Number of Successful Applicants
ca. 10 S-SPRING students
Support:
Livelihood support: JPY 150,000 per month
However, for international students who will receive support from the 2026 academic year onwards,
the living support grant will be provided for the 2026 academic year (one year), and will not be provided from the 2027 academic year onwards.
Research Fund: JPY 400,000 or 700,000 annually
International Academic Activities: JPY 500,000 once
Skill Development: Transferable skills training through S-SPRING Camp

Application Requirements
As of April 1, 2026
・Doctoral Program for the graduate students of the Graduate School of Science and Technology: Students who have been enrolled in the program for less than 1 year.
・Doctoral Program for the graduate students of the Graduate School of Medical Research: Students who have been enrolled in the program for more than 1 year but less than 2 years.
※ Leave of absence does not count toward the enrollment period.
※ Those who, as of April 1, 2026, do not fall into any of the following categories.
・International students who receive scholarships from their home countries or Japan including JSPS scholarships
・Those who receive financial support of JPY 160,000 or more per month from any scholarship foundation.
・Those who are deemed to have a stable income (JPY 2.4 million or more per year) from their university or company, such as a salary or executive compensation, at a level sufficient to cover living expenses.
※Income from internship salaries/compensation, RA/TA, part-time jobs, etc. is not included.
